September in SF: Pubs, Books and Poems

The city is hot, well, for us, it’s been around the mid to high 70s, and with the humidity, it’s a bit unbearable considering it’s usually 64 and sunny. But I’m surviving with the fan on full blast at home and trying to stay inside while the sun is out.

What have I been up to? Well, as the country implodes under Trump’s reign, I’ve been focusing on keeping the peace with myself to get through the days, which means visiting pubs, reading as many books as I can (while in Grad school), and making sure I digest poems.

Pubs/Bars in SF

That I’ve recently been to and highly recommend!

The Pig & Whistle

Excellent fish and chips, which were the biggest serving I’ve seen in SF!

Fish and chips at The Pig & Whistle in San Francisco

Fish and chips are my go-to whenever I visit a pub. It’s one of my favorite dishes and I will determine how much I like a pub by the quality of their fish and chips.

The Blarney Stone Bar

Wonderful atmosphere. Popped in here with friends before dinner across the street and was instantly charmed by the old-school pub feel. There’s also a patio in the back and three adorable dogs were hanging around. Will definitely return!

Nickie’s

A spot for the locals. It felt like a scene out of Cheers and was wholly entertaining. The fish and chips were delicious and I got an order of onion rings too which were amazing.

And my go-to fav in my neighborhood, Sutter Pub. Whenever family comes to visit, we go here. Whenever I’m feeling down or need a quick dinner, you’ll find me at Sutter Pub. It’s tiny and feels like home and the service has always been on top of it, quick, attentive, and very chill. I really appreciate this pub because I know I can rely on it for it’s fantastic food, breakfast, lunch or dinner, excellent fish and chips and an impressive selection of beers to choose from. Highly recommend to anyone in SF.

Books I’m Reading

Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark

I’m a huge fan of Elvira, and her memoir was recommended to me by a frien,d and it does not disappoint. She is honest and hilarious, and I admire her confidence.

The Emperor of Gladness

I’m still working on this one by Ocean Vuong. I went to his reading in SF this summer, and it was insightful and inspiring. I love his articulate speech and ability to share stories in a captivating way on the spot. Truly, Vuong is one of the most talented writers we have right now.

Poetry

I picked up Selected Later Poems by C.K. Williams at Forest Books in Japantown a couple weeks ago, and I love it. C.K. Williams’ poetry has been recommended to me multiple times, so I snapped this book up and have been admiring how the lines are structured and the use of punctuation. Excellent read for poets.

Thanks for reading!

Until next time
